Feeding your Guinea Pig
Wild guineas wear down their teeth because they continue to grow through out their lives, by chewing and gnawing on plants. You must help domestic cavies do this as well. It is important that no matter what you feed them, you allow your guinea to gnaw.
Piggies do not have very good vitamin C, so their diet should consist of mostly pellets. Make sure the pellets you are feeding them are Timothy based. If they are not, do NOT switch the food suddenly without warning. A sudden change in diet can cause the guinea pig to not want to eat. Instead begin mixing the two types of pellets together, about half an half. Keep feeding them this way for a few weeks before switching entirely to the Timothy pellets. Grass and hay can also be fed to them. A good way to help with their low vitamin C is to give them fresh fruit and vegetables as well. 20 milligrams of vitamin C each day is all they need. Some good choices for feeding your guinea are things like skinless melon, cauliflower stalks, carrots, celery, tomatoes, and apples. For things like celery and nuts, some have reported their guineas choking on them. Make sure you cut up the larger pieces into small ones to prevent something like this from happening.
Be careful if you decide to feed your cavy clover or cabbage. Both of these foods are healthy for your guinea, but they can cause gas.
An 8 oz water bottle is preferred for giving them water, but you can use a bowl. The piggies just tend to knock the bowls over, spilling the contents. This can be a hassle, both to clean up and to refill the bowl every time it happens. If you do use a bowl, make sure you have extra bedding and a towel handy. If the water from the bowl does spill, the bedding will become very uncomfortable and less than hygienic for the piggy. Soggy bedding can mold and irritate your piggy’s senses, this can lead to them becoming ill from an easily avoidable situation.
Here is a video I found in case you are raising an orphan guinea pig. It is best to teach them to feed from a bottle. I did not make this video, nor did I star in it. I just thought it would be helpful for you.
