Chutt, Chirp, and Chutter
Guinea Pigs are very vocal creatures. They are well known for speaking their mind in the only ways they know how.
Guineas use a wide variety of sounds in order to express their moods. Here are some of the most recognized and recorded sounds Guinea Pigs make. Pay attention, you may soon be able to tell whether your guinea is squealing with joy, or screaming with fright.
Growl: Piggies don’t growl very much but the sound is unmistakeable. It is a deep, guttural sound, like the type you would hear from any animal. Piggies will usually only growl if they are feeling threatened.
Squeal: A long, loud, high-pitched noise. You will recognise this sound immediately upon hearing it, but lets hope you don’t. This is the sound a piggy makes when it is injured or in pain. If you hear this, take your guinea pig to the vet immediately in order to find the cause and alleviate the pain.
Tooth chatter: This is a frightened response. Sometimes also used to show aggression, use caution when approaching a guinea reacting this way. This is also used as a sign of satisfaction while the piggy is being pet.
Chirp: Chirps are softer sounds used to indicate that the piggy is upset or in distress.
Chutter: A long, wavering sound that rises and falls in intensity. You may hear it when your piggy is fearful.
Scream: If you hear your piggy scream, it is very upset and frightened. This sound indicates that your guinea pig feels trapped and unable to escape and in need of rescue.
Chutt: This sounds exactly as the name implies. It is a brief sound you will here often during normal activities, such as, investigating the cage.
Whistle: This is a common sound you will hear a lot. It is the sound your piggy makes when they want attention from you.
Whine: Piggies will whine if they want to avoid a situation. It is used as a means of protecting themselves.
Piggies also have very sensitive ears. They can hear sounds ranging from 500 to 50,000 Hz!
